The director himself identified as it an "anti-western", as it overlooked or outright subverted several common western conventions. The film at heart is intended as a much more practical portrayal of lifestyle while in the aged west; some thing which one particular reviewer remarked could be like what a documentary filmaker might make if he traveled back over time to the era and filmed folks going about their each day lives.

Starting up with becoming established from the comparatively wooded northwestern America in contrast to the orange deserts with the southwest as most westerns are; expert gambler John McCabe (Warren Beatty) turns up during the tiny city of Presbyterian Church (referred to as after its only significant building) one particular day for the start of the twentieth century, and immediately has your entire city less than his thumb. He establishes a brothel with a couple of prostitutes ordered in the nearby town of Bearpaw.

Not prolonged later on, opium-addicted brothel madam Constance Miller (Julie Christie) turns up in town herself and convinces McCabe that she can perform a much better position jogging the brothel than he can, and that she is going to discuss the enhanced gains with him if he lets her achieve this.

He accepts. The two prosper, but then a pair of agents from the Harrison Shaughnessy mining firm in Bearpaw get there trying to find to buyout McCabe's company. He refuses, attempting to travel the value up, nevertheless they get rid of patience and go away city. Miller warns him that the organization contains a name for sending assassins to destroy individuals who will not sell. Confident adequate, about three gunslingers arrive shortly right after. McCabe fights them
