Now more than 100 years old, the Royal African Society (RAS) is Britain's primary Africa organisation. Through its journal, African Affairs, its websites, publications, meetings, discussions and other activities, the Society strengthens links between Africa and Britain and encourages understanding of Africa and its relations with the rest of the world.

The RAS organizes over 100 events and meetings a year to promote discussion about Africa and foster a better understanding of the continent - its history, politics, culture, problems and potential. These meetings cover a wide variety of topics and formats, discussions and presentations by leading Africans and expert Africanists. They include business breakfasts, conferences, meetings, book launches, panel discussions, cultural festivals including Film Africa and Africa Writes.

The Events Officer, which is a new post, will join RAS at a time of expansion of the organization. The Events Officer will assist the Programme Co-ordinator to increase RAS' capacity to run a larger programme of events and meetings and play a key role in helping with the organization of the cultural festivals.

Job Description

Primary responsibilities

Assist with researching, planning and implementing an events programme for the RAS
Help with identifying and securing speakers and special guests
Assist with the organization of the two annual festivals - Film Africa and Africa Writes
Research new opportunities for events
Co-ordinate venue management, catering and equipment hire
Co-ordinate administration of events including invitations, RSVPs, guest lists etc.
Maintain and develop the relevant database
Assist with financial administration of events
Liaise with the Website Editor and contribute website content
Carry out a post event evaluation including analysis, data entry and producing reports
The successful applicant will be a graduate with the following skills, experience and qualities:

have experience of organizing and managing events
have a good knowledge of African issues and the international politics of Africa
have excellent time management, organizational and project management skills
have good communication and presentation skills
have a positive and adaptable approach to problem solving
be innovative and creative
be able to work as part of a team
possess an eye for detail
be proficient in using MS Office
be able to use Adobe Photoshop or equivalent (desirable but not essential)
have commitment to the values and ethos of the Royal African Society
