The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is one of the UK's leading science facilities and research centres. It is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate standards, science and technology available.

NPL occupies a unique position as the UK's National Measurement Institute and sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. Its expertise and original research have underpinned quality of life, innovation and competitiveness for UK citizens and business for more than a century.

A scientist/engineer is required to work on projects related to the development of magnetic materials for applications such as sustainable electric motors for MORE electric transport. The position will involve working closely with industry to develop measurement methods to determine the properties of the materials for the conditions of use. These include determining the properties of permanent magnet materials at their operating temperature and soft magnetic materials in the presence of stress. The successful candidate will be involved with the design, build, testing and accreditation of the measurement methods established.

This requires a strong understanding of the behaviour of magnetic materials from the underlying Physics to the contribution of geometry and dimensions on the performance of a product. Experience with magnetic related finite element modelling will be an advantage. FEM is used in designing measurement methods and in providing complete solutions to industries that are not expert in magnetics. Industrial collaboration is of growing importance and the successful candidate will be expected to lead projects with industry from the proposal stage through to the exploitation of the results. Involvement in committees concerned with the standardisation of magnetic material measurement methods is expected and will require strong communication and knowledge transfer skills.

As part of the Serco Group plc, we offer competitive salaries, a wealth of career opportunities and a wide range of benefits.

NPL is based in a unique research environment which is located in pleasant surroundings on the edge of Bushy Park in south-west London. We have a host of onsite facilities including a subsidised crèche, restaurant, and a sports and social club.

NPL Management Limited is committed to supporting their people to develop both personally and professionally and is committed to equal opportunities.
